Florianópolis is the capital of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, in the southern region of the country. The municipality is composed of the main island, Santa Catarina Island, the mainland portion, and some small surrounding islands. The city has a population of 500,973 inhabitants, according to 2019 estimates from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
It is the second most populous municipality in the state (after Joinville) and the 48th in Brazil. The metropolitan region has an estimated population of 1,209,818 inhabitants, the 21st largest in the country. The "Island of Magic," as it is affectionately known, is known for its high quality of life, being the Brazilian capital with the highest score on the Human Development Index (HDI), calculated by the UNDP, of the United Nations.

The Hercílio Luz Bridge is a suspension bridge located at the entrance to Florianópolis, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, and is the oldest of the three bridges that connect the island and mainland parts of the state capital.
